List of domestic dogs

The Epagneul Picard is an FCI recognized dog breed from France ( FCI Group 7, Section 1.2, Standard No. 108 ).

Origin and history

The Epagneul Français and also the Epagneul Picard were popular in the French royal family. Both dog breeds come from Picardy . The landscapes of Picardy are divided into fields, water, forest and swamp in many ways. What was needed here was a dog that was robust, eager to work, protruded well , and could find waterfowl in the many waterways in the region.

About 90 years ago, two different breeds began to be bred from one basic type. They are similar to the Deutsch Langhaar and the Great Münsterländer . Even today, the focus of breeding is in Picardy, and especially in the Somme department .

In 1908, the breed was in the SCC as a separate breed established and recognized by the FCI.

description

The figure of the Epagneul Picard is the strongest among the French long-haired breeds. The rather coarse, not very silky fur is dotted with gray with brown plates, mostly has tan-colored markings on the legs, especially on the muzzle and above the eyes, gray mold is also allowed, but too much white is not welcome. The hanging ears are set quite low and covered with beautifully wavy silk hair, as is the tail , which should not be too long. Unlike other hunting dogs , this one has not been docked in the past either . A nice flag , that is longer fur on the tail, is desirable.

Essence

The essence of Epagneul Picard is characterized by reliability and obedience. Dogs of this breed are generally very prudent. In addition, this pedigree dog has versatile hunting dog characteristics. These four-legged friends are very persistent and have a fine nose. As a rule, this hunting dog is mainly used for hunting work after the shot. In its country of origin, France, this pedigree dog is mainly used to hunt poultry. Basically, these dogs are suitable for both land and water hunting. The character of Epagneul Picard is said to be friendly. Due to its hunting dog characteristics, the robust French pedigree dog is not suitable as a pure family dog.

use

The Epagneul Picard is a hunting dog. His reliability on sweat when searching, his passion for water, the quiet short search under the shotgun and his maneuverability have quickly made him a sought-after all-rounder.
