Origin and history

The Tibetan Spaniel seems to go back to dogs that were born around 1000 BC. Chr. Lived in the Central Asian region. The first mentions date from the time of the Chin Dynasty 225 to 206 BC. The first records from Tibet are only available since the development of the Tibetan script around 630 AD. Bronzes and ceramics from 1100 to 1644 show this type of dog, which also bears a resemblance to today's Pekingese, but with a significantly longer snout and longer back. It appears that from the later 17th century, a flat-nosed dog began to be bred, which we now refer to as the Pekingese .

It cannot be ruled out that the dog type Tibetan Spaniel came to Europe very early on via the Silk Road and perhaps became one of the ancestors of European small and miniature dogs such as the Continental Miniature Spaniel, Papillon, etc.

The first litter of Tibetan Spaniels mentioned in Europe dates back to 1895 in England. The breed was of next to no importance in breeding circles. In 1934 the first breed standard was published, from then on some breeders took on the breed. The Second World War ruined all efforts, after which there was practically no inventory. As a result, new dogs were imported from Tibet and practically started all over again. In 1959 the standard was renewed and in 1961 it was recognized by the FCI.

description

The Tibetan Spaniel is one of the few dogs that has barely changed over the centuries, perhaps millennia. He is a companion dog that is up to 25.4 cm tall and weighs just under 7 kg, all colors and their combinations can occur, the outer coat is silky, of medium length, the undercoat is very fine. The ears hang, are of medium size and do not touch the skull.

Essence and use

It is robust, tough, typical of its origin, absolutely weatherproof with keen senses. After all, he is and was not only a luxury dog, but also fulfilled the tasks of keeping the house and yard free of rats and mice, reporting strangers and that at high altitudes around 4000 m in the Himalayas. Because dogs were brought back to Europe from there over and over again, these characteristics have been preserved.
