The Boykin Spaniel is a non- FCI recognized dog breed from the United States that has been recognized by the AKC since 2009 . The breed is the official state dog of South Carolina .

Origin and history

The Boykin Spaniel was the beginning of the 20th century in Spartanburg in the US state of first bred South Carolina as a race and after his Erstzüchter Lemuel Whitaker Boykin named (1861 to 1932). Boykin, who organized hunting trips for tourists, got the abandoned male Dumpy from a friend who had found him behind a church. This male turned out to be an excellent water dog , but he was smaller than a retriever and so caused less vibrations when hunting from a boat.

Boykin crossed Dumpy with the equally homeless bitch Singo , he in a pet carrier at the station of Camden had been found and a maroon and spaniel-like has been described. The Boykin Spaniel goes back to the offspring from this cross. In the course of time, other breeds were crossed again and again, as the Boykin Spaniel was bred as a pure working dog at that time .

A stud book was opened for the first time in the 1960s . In the late 1990s , a group of breeders applied for AKC recognition, which resulted in the Boykin Spaniel being shown in the Miscellaneous Class for the first time in 2008 . In 2009, the final recognition by the AKC, which assigned the breed to the Sporting Group .

The Boykin Spaniel is a versatile, compactly built Spaniel- type hunting dog . He should be able to move agile and quite fast in the field and be persistent enough to be able to hunt all day long. His physique is balanced, a little longer than he is tall, ideally between 35 and 46 cm shoulder height.

The coat of the Boykin Spaniel is medium-length, smooth to slightly wavy, and consists of a short, dense undercoat and medium-length outer coat , longer on the ears, chest, stomach and legs. The color is brown or liver in various shades, with a small white spot on the chest being tolerated.

Essence

The Boykin Spaniel is generally friendly and a willing working dog for the hunt that is relatively easy to train. He seeks the company of humans and usually gets along well with children and other dogs. Signs of aggressiveness and pronounced shyness are mistakes and must be punished in the assessment.
