An animal transport box (also called a kennel, dog box or dog cage ) is a container that is used as a safe means of transport for pets (especially dogs and cats ).

Material and structure

Animal transport boxes are foldable, pluggable and collapsible as well as rigid, more stable boxes. Foldable boxes are often made of simple and flexible material such as plastic, textile materials and foils and are primarily used for transporting small pets such as cats and smaller dogs. Plug-in and foldable boxes are more stable and are usually made of plastic or aluminum . Rigid transport boxes made of steel or aluminum are the safest and most stable animal transport boxes and are therefore used for transporting large and agile dogs.

Placement and attachment

During transport in the car, animal transport boxes are attached to the eyelets, hooks and lashing straps provided either in a trunk open to the passenger cell or on the back seat with the car belt . Some cages with bars are also permanently mounted in the trunk.

Statutory Regulations

In the event of a car accident, there is a risk that an unsecured animal will be thrown forward in a collision and injure the driver and front passenger due to its own weight. In Germany, there is a risk of a warning or fine if an animal is not transported safely, as, according to Section 23 of the Road Traffic Act, the driver of a vehicle is responsible for ensuring that the road safety of the vehicle is not impaired by the load (including animals).

Separate regulations apply to the transport of pets in airplanes , namely the Live Animals Regulations of the International Air Transport Association . An appropriate size and stability of the box and, depending on the flight length, the availability of a drinker are specified. Depending on the airline, smaller transport boxes can be carried as cabin luggage, while larger boxes are always transported in the air-conditioned cargo hold.
