history

Camden is the fourth oldest city in South Carolina. It is close to the center of the Cofitachequi tribe that existed in the 1500s. In 1730 Camden became part of a parish plan mandated by King George II . The place was originally laid out in 1732 as Fredericksburg in the south of today's urban area. However, many settlers chose the higher point in the north, whereby the Fredericksburg settlement disappeared. In 1758, Joseph Kershaw from Yorkshire , England came to the parish and started a business and renamed the parish Pine Tree Hill. Camden became the main inland trading center in the colony. Kershaw suggested that the city be renamed Camden in honor of Lord Camden , a champion of colonial rights in the British Parliament.

In August 1780 the Battle of Camden took place 10 km north of Camden during the American Revolutionary War . It was one of the Americans' greatest defeats in the Revolutionary War.
