Tourism and golf

The well-known and very popular holiday destination in the USA is located on the almost 100 km long famous " Grand Strand ", which is also synonymous with the whole area. The economy of the city and the surrounding area is largely geared towards tourism; there is no industry. In summer, during the high season, helpers for hotels etc. are recruited from the surrounding counties.

The separate town of North Myrtle Beach , north of Myrtle Beach, is part of the Greater Myrtle Beach area. It is known for its nightlife reserved for the younger crowd, while the southern section, Surfside Beach , has a more family-oriented atmosphere. The entertainment offer includes mini golf and golf courses, shopping malls (including outlet centers), Ferris wheels, roller coasters, restaurants, night clubs and souvenir shops, theaters, extravagant music shows and various water sports activities. Family Kingdom is a very popular amusement park that is fun for young and old. The older Myrtle Beach Pavilion was demolished due to its advanced age. Myrtle Beach continues to be known for its variety of restaurants. There are, for example, restaurants with local specialties, but also a number of well-known restaurant chains and, last but not least, “all you can eat” buffets. The high number of restaurants is mainly due to the pronounced tourism.

Myrtle Beach and its surroundings boast of being the golf metropolis worldwide. Due to the mild temperatures all year round, golf is possible almost all year round. Within an hour's drive (70 km) there is the highest density of golf courses in America with around 120 golf courses with a wide range of requirements and the largest golf store in the world. Due to the high number of golf courses and tourists visiting Myrtle Beach each year, Myrtle Beach also has an above-average density of hotels. The American Automobile Association (American variant of the German ADAC ) has identified the top 10 travel destinations for the 2015 spring season. Little Myrtle Beach ranks 4th on this list, ahead of cities like New York or Washington DC, which is likely to continue to drive economic and population growth.

Myrtle Beach has an airport ( Myrtle Beach International Airport ), which is located in the south of the city on the site of a former US Air Force base .

In Myrtle Beach and the surrounding area, traffic connections are continuously being improved, as the city is populated with tourists in the main summer season and in the event of a hurricane, safe and speedy departure is hindered by narrow streets.
