Hugh Thompson "Tom" Rice Jr. (born August 4, 1957 in Myrtle Beach , South Carolina ) is an American politician . He has represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives since 2013 .

Career

Tom Rice attended the University of South Carolina at Columbia until 1979 . After completing a law degree at the same university and being admitted to the bar in 1982, he began working in this profession in 1985. His specialty is tax law. He had previously worked in various other professions. Among other things, he worked as an accountant. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 2010 and 2012, he was a member and chairman of the Horry County County Council .

In the 2012 congressional election , Rice was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the re-established seventh constituency of South Carolina , where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 2013. After two re-elections so far in 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

During his first legislative period (2013–2015) he was a member of the Budget Committee , the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure and the Committee on Small Business . He was also a member of four sub-committees. Since 2015 he belongs or was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means .

Rice is considered a Conservative MP.
