Timothy Eugene "Tim" Scott (* 19th September 1965 in Charleston , South Carolina ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He has been a member of the US Senate since 2013 .

Career

Tim Scott attended Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina in 1983 and 1984. He then studied political science at Charleston Southern University until 1988. He then became the owner of an insurance company; he was or is also active as a financial advisor. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1995 and 2008 he was a member of the Charleston County District Council , which he chaired in 2007. In 1996 he ran unsuccessfully for the South Carolina Senate . In 2009 and 2010 he was a member of the House of Representatives in his state. He was the first African-American Republican to be elected to this body in South Carolina in more than 100 years .

In the 2010 congressional election , Scott was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of South Carolina , where he succeeded the no longer-running Henry E. Brown on January 3, 2011 . He is the first African-American Congressman of the Republican Party from South Carolina since 1901. In his election, he was supported by sections of the Tea Party movement . In Congress he is a member of the Rules Committee and a subcommittee. In the 2012 congressional elections , he prevailed against the Democrat Bobbie Rose with 62:35 percent of the vote .

Following the resignation of Senator Jim DeMint on December 17, 2012, Scott was appointed DeMint's successor by Governor Nikki Haley . He was sworn in as a Senator from South Carolina on January 2, 2013. Scott initially held the office until the November 2014 by-election, which he also won. He was the first African American Senator from the ranks of the Republicans since Edward Brooke , whose tenure ended in 1979, and the only African American senator in the 113th Congress . He was re-elected in the 2016 elections. His new term runs until January 3, 2023.

Scott is the owner of an insurance agency and a partner in Pathway Real Estate Group, LLC.
