Jim Clyburn
James Enos "Jim" Clyburn (born July 21, 1940 in Sumter , South Carolina ) is a US Democratic Party politician . He has been a member of the US House of Representatives since 1993 , where he represents the sixth congressional constituency of the state of South Carolina. He has been his party's majority whip since January 2019 .
James Clyburn is a distant relative of former Congressman George W. Murray (1853–1926). In 1957 he graduated from Mather Academy in Camden . He then studied until 1961 at the South Carolina State University in Orangeburg . In the following years he worked as a teacher and consultant in the field of employment (employment counselor). He served on the South Carolina State Employment Security Commission in 1965 and 1966 . He then worked until 1968 as director of a city authority in the city of Charleston ( Charleston County Neighborhood Youth Corps and New Careers Projects) . Between 1968 and 1971 he worked for the South Carolina State Commission for Farm Workers. He was then a member of Governor John C. West's staff from 1971 to 1974 . Eventually he worked for the South Carolina Human Affairs agency from 1974 to 1992 .
In the 1992 congressional election , Jim Clyburn was elected as a candidate for his Democratic Party in the sixth constituency of the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1993. As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2018, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2021. In the course of his long tenure as a congressman, he has been or is a member of several committees and congressional caucuses . Between 2007 and 2011 he held the office of Majority Whip . This made him the third most powerful Democrat in the 111th Congress. In 2011 he was elected House Assistant Democratic Leader . In 2006 and 2007 he was also chairman of the House Democratic Conference .
He has been married to Emily since 1961.
