Joseph R. Bryson
Joseph Raleigh Bryson (born January 18, 1893 in Brevard , Transylvania County , North Carolina , † March 10, 1953 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1953 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1900, Joseph Bryson came to Greenville , South Carolina with his parents . There he attended public schools including Furman University , which he graduated from in 1917. In between he was a member of the South Carolina National Guard in 1915 and 1916. During the First World War he was drafted into the National Guard from 1917 to 1918. There he was first in the medical service and then with an infantry unit . After completing a law degree at the University of South Carolina at Columbia and his admission to the bar in 1920, he began his new profession in Greenville.
Politically, Bryson was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1921 and 1924 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives , and from 1929 to 1932 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1938 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of South Carolina , where he succeeded Gabriel H. Mahon on January 3, 1939 . After seven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on March 10, 1953 . During this time the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War fell . In 1951, the 22nd amendment to the Constitution was passed in Congress . Joseph Bryson died on March 10, 1953 at Bethesda Naval Hospital , Maryland and was buried in Greenville.
