Charles W. Buttz

Charles Wilson Buttz (born November 16, 1837 in Stroudsburg , Monroe County , Pennsylvania , † July 20, 1913 in Lisbon , North Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1876 and 1877 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1839, Charles Buttz came to Buttzville , New Jersey with his parents . There he attended public schools. He then studied law in Belvidere . This study was interrupted by the civil war in which Buttz participated as a first lieutenant in the Union Army. After being wounded in 1863, he had to quit military service. After his admission as a lawyer in the same year, he began to work in Norfolk in his new profession.

Buttz was a member of the Republican Party and took part in 1864 as a delegate to the Republican National Convention . That same year he became a director of the Exchange Bank of Virginia ; In 1866 he became a district attorney in King William County , Virginia. In 1870, Charles Buttz moved to Charleston , South Carolina. There he worked as a public prosecutor in the first judicial district from 1872 to 1880. In 1874 he ran unsuccessfully against Edmund William McGregor Mackey for the US House of Representatives. Buttz appealed against the election result. As a result, on July 19, 1876, Congress declared the controversial parliamentary seat vacant. Buttz won the by-elections that were now due. This enabled him to end the current legislative period in Congress between November 7, 1876 and March 3, 1877. In the regular congressional elections of 1876, he no longer ran.

In 1878 Charles Butzz moved to Fargo , North Dakota. In this state he was involved in the establishment of Ransom County in 1882 . From 1884 to 1886 Buttz worked as a public prosecutor. Between 1903 and 1909 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Dakota . He died on July 20, 1913 in Lisbon and was buried there.
