William Jennings Bryan Dorn
William Jennings Bryan Dorn (born April 14, 1916 in Greenwood , Greenwood County , South Carolina , † August 13, 2005 ibid) was an American politician . He represented the state of South Carolina as a member of the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Jennings Bryan Dorn was born near Greenwood in 1916, where he attended public school. It was named after William Jennings Bryan . Dorn dealt with agriculture. He was a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina in 1939 and 1940 . He then sat in the State Senate from 1941 to 1942 .
During the Second World War he enlisted as a simple soldier in the United States Army Air Forces . There he completed his service from June 20, 1942 until his discharge as a corporal on October 12, 1945. From this time he spent 19 months in the European theater of war.
politics
After the war he was elected to the 80th Congress as a Democrat . His tenure ran from January 3, 1947 to January 3, 1949. He did not run for Congress again in 1948, but applied for the Democratic nomination for the US Senate , but was subject to incumbent Burnet R. Maybank. He then worked again with agriculture. He then ran successfully again for Congress and was re-elected eleven more times. His term of office ran from January 3, 1951 to his resignation on December 31, 1974. In 1974 he decided not to run again for the 84th Congress.
During his tenure in Congress, he was involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. He was also chairman of the Committee on Veterans' Affairs (83rd Congress).
Dorn ran unsuccessfully for the post of governor of South Carolina in 1974. He lost the Democratic primary against Charles D. Ravenel, but eventually became a Democratic candidate because his opponent could not prove that he had lived in South Carolina long enough to meet the requirements of the state constitution. In the actual gubernatorial election he was then defeated by Republican James B. Edwards . In 1978 Dorn tried again to be run as a Democratic candidate for the Senate election, but he was eliminated after a three-person election. He was then from 1980 to 1984 chairman of South Carolina's Democratic Party.
