John Wilson (politician, 1773)
John Wilson (born August 11, 1773 in Pelzer , Anderson County , Province of South Carolina , † August 13, 1828 in Golden Grove , South Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1821 and 1827 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Wilson attended public schools in his home country. He then worked in agriculture near Golden Grove, Anderson County. He also operated a ferry across the Saluda River . At the same time he began a political career. Between 1812 and 1817 he was a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina .
In the 1820 congressional election, Wilson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC as a candidate for the Democratic Republican Party in the seventh constituency of South Carolina . There he took over from Elias Earle on March 4, 1821 . He represented this district until March 3, 1823. In the following two legislative periods up to March 3, 1827 he represented the sixth electoral district as successor to George McDuffie in Congress .
In 1826 he was defeated by Warren R. Davis . After that, Wilson withdrew from politics. He died on August 13, 1828 on his estate near Golden Grove. He was also buried there.
