Andrew R. Govan
Andrew Robison Govan (born January 13, 1794 in Orangeburg , Orangeburg County , South Carolina , † June 27, 1841 in Hudsonville , Mississippi ) was an American politician . Between 1822 and 1827 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Andrew Govan received a private education in Willington . He then studied until 1813 at South Carolina College , later the University of South Carolina in Columbia . He then bought a plantation and became interested in horse racing. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party . From 1820 to 1821 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives . After the death of Congressman James Overstreet in 1822, he was elected in the fourth constituency of South Carolina as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he took up his new mandate on December 4, 1822. By March 3, 1823, he ended the legislature of his predecessor. Since he was confirmed in the regular congressional elections in 1822 and 1824, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1827 .
After the dissolution of his party in the 1820s, he joined the parliamentary group around the later US President Andrew Jackson , from which the Democratic Party emerged in 1828 . In Congress, Govan witnessed heated discussions between his party and the supporters of President John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay . In the years 1826 and 1828 Govan competed unsuccessfully for his stay or his return to Congress.
Andrew Govan moved to Mississippi in 1828. In the local Marshall County he worked as a planter on his plantation "Snowdown" until his death in 1841 . He was also buried there. Three of his sons later became officers in the Confederate Army . The son George was also Secretary of State executive officer of the state of Mississippi.
