Floyd Spence

Floyd Davidson Spence (born April 9, 1928 in Columbia , South Carolina , †  August 16, 2001 in Jackson , Mississippi ) was an American politician . Between 1971 and 2001 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Floyd Spence attended Lexington High School in South Carolina and then studied until 1956 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Between 1947 and 1988 he was a member of the US Navy Reserve . In 1956, Spence was admitted to the bar. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party at the time . Between 1956 and 1962 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives . In 1962 he switched to the Republican Party . As their candidate, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in Congress that same year . He narrowly lost to Albert William Watson .

From 1966 to 1970, Spence was a member of the South Carolina Senate . There he led the faction of the Republican Senators. He was a delegate to many regional republican conventions in his state. Between 1964 and 1984 he was also a delegate to all Republican National Conventions .

In 1970, Spence was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the Second Constituency of South Carolina . There he took over from Albert Watson on January 3, 1971. After 15 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on August 16, 2001. From 1995 to 1999 he was Chairman of the Committee on National Security and from 1999 to 2001 he headed the Armed Forces Committee. During his time in Congress, the Vietnam War ended, among other things . The Watergate affair also took place at this time . In addition, the 26th and 27th amendments were passed.

Floyd Spence died of brain surgery.
