John Spratt

John McKee Spratt Jr. (born November 1, 1942 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) is an American politician . From 1983 to 2011 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Spratt attended York High School in York (South Carolina) until 1960 . Until 1964 he studied at Davidson College in North Carolina. In the following two years until 1966 he continued his education at Oxford University in England . Until 1969 he studied law at Yale University . Between 1969 and 1971 he was a captain in the US Army . He served as a staff officer in the United States Department of Defense .

In the following years Spratt practiced as a lawyer in a joint law firm. He was also the president of a local bank. He also ran a small insurance agency and ran a farm. Politically Spratt joined the Democratic Party . In 1964 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City , on which US President Lyndon B. Johnson was nominated for another term. Between 1972 and 1980 he was a delegate to the regional Democratic Party Conventions in South Carolina.

In 1982 Spratt was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of South Carolina . There he took over from Kenneth Lamar Holland on January 3, 1983 . During this time he usually represented the positions of his party. In 1992 the 27th Amendment to the Constitution was passed. Spratt was a member of the Armed Forces Committee and three of its sub-committees. He was also chairman of the budget committee . On January 3, 2011, he resigned from Congress.

John Spratt is married to Jane Stacy, with whom he has three daughters. The couple have five grandchildren. The family lives in York.
