Allard Henry Gasque (born March 8, 1873 in Hyman , Marion County , South Carolina , †  June 17, 1938 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1923 and 1938 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Allard Gasque attended public schools in his home country. After that he worked on a farm and as a teacher. Until 1901 he studied at the University of South Carolina at Columbia . Then he began a long career in school service. From 1901 to 1902 he taught at the Waverly Graded School in Columbia. Between 1902 and 1923 he served as school board in Florence County . In 1911 and 1912 he was president of the Association of School Councils of South Carolina, and from 1914 to 1915 he was president of his state's teachers' association.

In addition to his school activities, Gasque also began a political career as a member of the Democrats . He served on the party's board of directors in South Carolina from 1912 to 1920. Between 1919 and 1923 he was the district chairman in Florence County. In 1922 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the sixth constituency of South Carolina, where he succeeded Philip H. Stoll on March 4, 1923 . After seven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on June 17, 1938 . From 1931 he was chairman of the committee that dealt with pension payments. During his tenure in the House of Representatives since 1933, most of the New Deal laws in the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt were passed. In 1933 the 20th and 21st amendments to the Constitution were passed.

After his death, his wife Elizabeth was elected to succeed him in Congress. She ended her husband's last legislative term on January 3, 1939.
