Elizabeth "Liz" Johnston Patterson (born November 18, 1939 in Columbia , South Carolina , † November 10, 2018 in Spartanburg , South Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1987 and 1993 she represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elizabeth Johnston, her maiden name, was born as the daughter of Olin D. Johnston (1896-1965). Her father had been the governor and US senator for South Carolina. She attended public schools in Kensington ( Maryland ) and Spartanburg (South Carolina). She then studied at the University of South Carolina in Columbia until 1962 . Between 1962 and 1964 she worked for the Peace Corps . She later served on the staff of Congressman James Robert Mann . She became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1975 and 1976 she was a member of the Spartanburg County county council . She served in the South Carolina Senate from 1979 to 1986 .

In 1986, Liz Patterson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of South Carolina . There she took over from Carroll A. Campbell on January 3, 1987 . After two re-elections, she was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1993 . In the 1992 election, Patterson lost to Bob Inglis . In 1994 she ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor of South Carolina. She later taught political science at Spartanburg Methodist College . She was also the Democratic Party leader in Spartanburg County.
