General John Bratton

John Bratton (* 7. March 1831 in Winnsboro , Fairfield County , South Carolina ; † 12. January 1898 ) was a brigadier general of the Confederate in the Civil War .

Life

Bratton attended the Academy of Mount Zion Institute in Winnsboro, graduated in 1850 from South Carolina College , now the University of South Carolina in Columbia , and in 1853 from South Carolina Medical College in Charleston, and worked as a doctor and farmer from 1853 to 1861 in Winnsboro . When the civil war broke out, he volunteered in the Confederate Army and served there throughout the war, ending with the rank of brigadier general .

After the war he went into politics. In 1865 he took part in the Constitutional Convention of South Carolina, the following year he was a member of the State Senate . In 1876 he led his state's delegation to the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis ; four years later he again took part in the Democratic Congress. After the death of Congressman John H. Evins , Bratton took his place in the US House of Representatives from December 8, 1884 to March 3, 1885 .

Then he retired from politics and occupied himself with his plantation near Winnsboro until his death on January 12, 1898.
