John Light Napier (born May 16, 1947 in Blenheim , Marlboro County , South Carolina ) is an American lawyer and politician . Between 1981 and 1983 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Napier attended public schools in his home country. He then studied at Davidson College in North Carolina until 1969 . This was followed by a law degree at the University of South Carolina in Columbia , which continued until 1972 . Politically, Napier became a member of the Republican Party . In the years following his admission to the bar, he worked as an advisor to several subcommittees of the US Senate . From 1976 to 1978 he was also a member of the staff of long-time Senator Strom Thurmond . He then worked as a private lawyer for two years.

In the 1980 congressional election, Napier was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of South Carolina . There he took over on January 3, 1981, succeeding John Jenrette, who resigned in December 1980 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Robin Tallon in the 1982 elections, he was only able to complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1983 . Napier returned to practice as a lawyer between 1983 and 1986. In 1984 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Dallas , where President Ronald Reagan was nominated for a second term. He appointed Napier a federal judge at the United States Court of Federal Claims in 1986 - a position he held until 1989. In 1992, Napier was an advisor to a Congressional Committee of Inquiry into irregularities in the Congressional Post Office. After that he worked as a lawyer again. Napier now lives in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
