John Jacob Riley (born February 1, 1895 in Orangeburg , Orangeburg County , South Carolina , † January 1, 1962 in Surfside Beach , South Carolina) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He represented the state of South Carolina as a member of the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Jacob Riley was born on February 1, 1895 on a farm in Orangeburg County , where he attended public school. He graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg in 1915 . He then taught from 1915 to 1917 at a school in Orangeburg and from 1917 to 1918 at the Agricultural and Mechanical College in Clemson . During World War I , he served as a second class seaman and a third class yeoman in the United States Navy from 1918 to 1919 . After the war, he ran real estate and insurance businesses in Sumter from 1919 to 1945 . He was also secretary of a building and loan fund from 1923 to 1945.

politics

Between 1928 and 1944, Riley attended all state-level Democratic conventions in South Carolina as a delegate. In 1944 he was elected to the 79th and subsequently also to the 80th  Congress . His term of office ran from January 3, 1945 to January 3, 1949. In 1948 he ran again for the 81st Congress, but was defeated; however, he succeeded again in the election in the 82nd and the five subsequent congresses. His tenure ran from January 3, 1951 until his death in Surfside Beach on January 1, 1962. He was buried in Sumter Cemetery. During his tenure in Congress in 1956 he was involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions.

John Jacob Riley was married to Corinne Boyd Riley , who succeeded him in Congress.
