George Johnstone (politician)

George Johnstone (born April 18, 1846 in Newberry , Newberry County , South Carolina , † March 8, 1921 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Johnstone attended public schools in his home country. He then attended the South Carolina Military Academy. Like all cadets in the institution, he was accepted into the Confederate Army during the Civil War . He stayed there until the end of the war in 1865.

After the war, Johnstone studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland between 1866 and 1869 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1871, he began to practice in Newberry in his new profession. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1877 and 1884 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives . In 1881 he was on a commission that revised the state's tax laws. From 1880 to 1884 he was a member of his party's executive committee for South Carolina.

In 1890, Johnstone was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the Third Constituency of South Carolina , where he succeeded James S. Cothran on March 4 . Since he was no longer nominated by his party for the following elections, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1893 . After his tenure in the House of Representatives, Johnstone returned to work as a lawyer. In 1895 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the state constitution of South Carolina. After that he did not hold any other higher political offices. He died on March 8, 1921 in his hometown of Newberry.
