John Hunter (politician, 1732)

John Hunter (* 1732 in Province of South Carolina , †  1802 ) was an American politician ( Democratic Republican Party ) who represented the state of South Carolina in both chambers of Congress .

John Hunter worked in the agricultural field near Newberry after graduating from high school . He took on his first political mandate in 1786 when he moved into the South Carolina House of Representatives , of which he was a member until 1792. That year he was also a member of the Electoral College , which US President George Washington unanimously confirmed in office. Also in 1792 he was elected to the House of Representatives of the United States , where he remained from March 4, 1793 to March 3, 1795.

After US Senator Pierce Butler resigned , Hunter took his place in Congress. He sat in the Senate from December 8, 1796 and then resigned himself on November 26, 1798. He subsequently took care of his native plantation before he died in 1802 and was buried in Newberry County .
