John E. Colhoun
John Ewing Colhoun (* 1749 in Staunton , Colony of Virginia , † October 26, 1802 in Pendleton , South Carolina ) was an American politician ( Democratic Republican Party ) who represented the state of South Carolina in the US Senate .
John Colhoun's family immigrated to colonial America from the Irish province of Ulster . There he apparently changed his name from Calhoun to Colhoun after his birth; he was a cousin of John C. Calhoun , US Vice President between 1825 and 1832, and Joseph Calhoun , who represented South Carolina in the US House of Representatives . John C. Calhoun married John E. Colhoun's daughter Floride in 1811 .
Colhoun first attended public schools in Virginia and then graduated from the College of New Jersey , later Princeton University , in 1774 . He then moved to South Carolina, where he was a member of the state's House of Representatives from 1778 to 1800. He studied law , was inducted into the bar in 1783 and then worked as a lawyer in Charleston . He also worked as a farmer and was elected to the Privy Council . In 1785 he acted as agent for the property confiscated by the state.
In early 1801 Colhoun was a member of the South Carolina Senate ; There he was a member of a committee that should bring forward proposals for the revision of the US judicial system. In the same year he entered the US Senate in Washington . John Colhoun died on October 26, 1802 while staying in South Carolina.
