Frederick Adolphus Sawyer (born December 12, 1822 in Bolton , Worcester County , Massachusetts , †  July 31, 1891 in Claiborne County , Tennessee ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of South Carolina in the US Senate .

Frederick Sawyer attended the public schools of his native Massachusetts and then Harvard University , from which he graduated in 1844. He then worked as a teacher at several schools in New England until 1895 before he took over the management of the South Carolina State Normal School in Charleston . After the outbreak of the civil war , he lived again in the north before he returned to Charleston in February 1865 and took part in the reconstruction measures there . When the war ended, he was appointed tax officer for the Second District of South Carolina.

When his state was approved again to send representatives to Congress , Sawyer was elected US Senator along with Thomas J. Robertson . He served in Washington, DC from July 16, 1868 to March 4, 1873. During this time he was among other things chairman of the education committee. After his retirement from the Senate, Sawyer served as US Secretary of the Treasury under William Adams Richardson between 1873 and 1874 . He then worked for the United States Coast Survey until 1880 . From 1880 to 1887 he was a special agent for the War Ministry .

After his retirement from politics, Frederick Sawyer took over the management of a private preparatory school in Ithaca, New York State . He also gave private tuition to Cornell University students . He eventually moved to Tennessee and became president of an agricultural company in the Cumberland Gap . He held this post until his unexpected death in July 1891.
