Claiborne County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Tazewell .

The county is located in northeast Tennessee, borders Kentucky and Virginia to the north and has an area of ​​1,144 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Bell County, Kentucky, Lee County, Virginia, Hancock County , Grainger County , Union County , Campbell County, and Whitley County, Kentucky.

To the north, the Cumberland Gap connects Claiborne County with Kentucky. The county is traversed by the Powell River , the southern border is the Clinch River . Both rivers feed Norris Lake in which Claiborne County also has a share.

history

Claiborne County was formed on October 29, 1801 from parts of Grainger County and Hawkins County. It was named after William CC Claiborne , who was the first governor of Louisiana and the Mississippi and Orleans Territories and later a senator .

The Powell Valley Male Academy is one of the county's twelve entries in the NRHP.

Twelve buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 10, 2018).
