Coffee County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Manchester .

The county is located a little southeast of the geographic center of Tennessee, is about 60 km south of Alabama and has an area of 1,125 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cannon County , Warren County , Grunby County , Franklin County , Moore County , Bedford County, and Rutherford Counties .

history

Coffee County was formed on January 8, 1836 from parts of Bedford County, Franklin County and Warren County. It was named after John R. Coffee , an American brigadier general in the British-American War of 1812 who, under Jackson, participated in various battles such as the Battle of Talladega (1813), the Battle of Horseshoe Bend and the Battle of New Orleans . The Coffee County in Alabama was also named after him.

According to the 2000 census , Coffee County had 48,014 people in 18,885 households and 13,597 families. The population density was 43 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.43 percent white, 3.59 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 0.74 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.91 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.00 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.19 percent of the population.

Of the 18,885 households, 32.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.9 percent were married couples living together, 11.1 percent were single mothers, and 28.0 percent were non-families. 24.3 percent were single households and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average household size was 2.96 people.

25.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24, 28.4 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.6 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.1 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.3 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,898 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,228. Males had a median income of $ 32,732 versus $ 21,014 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,137. 10.9 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
