Fayette County was formed on September 29, 1824 from parts of Hardeman County and Shelby County. It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , who took part in the American Revolutionary War on the side of the colonists and played an important role in the French Revolution .

The Immanuel Church is one of twelve entries of the county in the NRHP.

Twelve buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 13, 2018).

As of the 2010 census , Fayette County had 38,413 people in 13,498 households. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.72 people each in the 13,498 households.

The racial the population was composed of 70.3 percent white, 28.0 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.6 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.4 percent of the population.
