The county is located in southwest Tennessee, borders Mississippi to the south and has an area of 1,829 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. Fayette County was formed on September 29, 1824 from parts of Hardeman County and Shelby County. It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , who took part in the American Revolutionary War on the side of the colonists and played an important role in the French Revolution .

As of the 2010 census , Fayette County had 38,413 people in 13,498 households. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.72 people each in the 13,498 households.
The racial the population was composed of 70.3 percent white, 28.0 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.6 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.4 percent of the population.
22.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.9 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.5 percent were 65 years or older. 50.3 percent of the population was female.
