The Wolf River is a river in western Tennessee and northern Mississippi . The river flows into the Mississippi River , at the confluence of the two waters the city of Memphis was formed .

The river has its source in the Holly Springs National Forest in Benton County, Mississippi, and flows for 145 kilometers in a northwesterly direction until it meets the Mississippi at Mud Island in Memphis.

Major cities on the river besides Memphis are Collierville and Germantown in Tennessee.

In the middle stream the wolf shows no signs of human interference, but its tributaries are almost all channel-like redesigned. The wolf itself still has numerous meanders. Trees and riparian forests can also be found at most of the banks. Part of the route is known as the Ghost River . There, a layer of sediment damms the water for several kilometers, a cypress forest is under water and is very popular with conservationists. Parts of this area - from the Mississippi / Tennessee state line to the Bateman Bridge - are designated as a protected wildlife management area. The area comprises 4,236 acres , of which 2,400 acres are in the Wolf's floodplain.

However, since cypresses cannot stand in the water permanently, it is foreseeable that the trees will die. The Wolf River is consistently canalized over the last 15 miles to the Mississippi.

The river was formed about 12,000 years ago when Ice Age glaciers flowed west into the Mississippi. Before the Europeans moved into the southeastern United States, the Mississippi culture spread in the area.

Musician Jeff Buckley drowned swimming in the Wolf River in 1997.
