Germantown is a city in Shelby County in the southwest of the US state Tennessee with 40,203 residents.
history
The first settlers arrived in the Germantown area between 1825 and 1830. In 1833 the emerging settlement was named Pea Ridge . The town's land was laid out by surveyor NT German in 1834 and the town's name was changed to Germantown in 1836, referring to the German families who settled there. The city was incorporated into Memphis in 1841 . The Memphis and Charleston Railroad was laid through Germantown in 1852. Germantown is a suburb of Memphis and borders the well-known city to the east. It is a quiet city with old trees and stately homes everywhere. There is practically no industry, but Germantown is an important and distinctive service and retail location. The city center is characterized by the old town with a train station built in 1868, which was rebuilt in 1948, and a historic railway line, the Memphis and Charleston Railroad.
