The Shelby County was formed on November 24, 1819 from parts of Hardin County. It was named after Isaac Shelby (1750-1826), an officer in the American Revolutionary War , victorious leader in the Battle of Kings Mountain and later first and fifth governor of Kentucky .

After the Republican Party had assumed most of the political offices and leadership positions in Shelby County since 2008 and maintained its dominance for years, the Democrats won the local elections in August 2018: They won 21 of 26 political positions, including the offices of mayor ( "Mayor") and sheriffs, who won the African American Lee Harris and Floyd Bonner.
