Shelby County is located in the center of the metropolitan area of Memphis .
geography
The county is located in the extreme southwest of Tennessee and on the south by the Mississippi and separated by the Mississippi to the west by Arkansas . Shelby County covers an area of 2030 square kilometers, of which 75 square kilometers are water.
The major rivers that flow through the county are the Loosahatchie River , Nonconnah Creek, and the Wolf River , all of which drain into the Mississippi River . This forms the lowest point in Tennessee at the point where it leaves the state in the direction of Mississippi .

The Shelby County was formed on November 24, 1819 from parts of Hardin County. It was named after Isaac Shelby (1750-1826), an officer in the American Revolutionary War , victorious leader in the Battle of Kings Mountain and later first and fifth governor of Kentucky .
Five locations in the county have National Historic Landmark status , including Graceland and the Sun Records studio . 185 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 4, 2018).
politics
After the Republican Party had assumed most of the political offices and leadership positions in Shelby County since 2008 and maintained its dominance for years, the Democrats won the local elections in August 2018: They won 21 of 26 political positions, including the offices of mayor ( "Mayor") and sheriffs, who won the African American Lee Harris and Floyd Bonner. The Republicans had held nine of the county's ten most important offices, and none after the 2018 election.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Shelby County had 927,644 people in 340,443 households. The population density was 74.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.65 people lived in 340,443 households.
The racial the population was composed of 43.6 percent white, 52.3 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 2.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 5.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
26.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 63.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 10.4 percent were 65 years or older. 52.3 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 44,705 USD . The per capita income was $ 25,002. 19.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
