The Memphis metropolitan area covers eight counties at the junction of US -amerikanischen states Tennessee , Mississippi and Arkansas with the Center Memphis . The metropolitan area is the second largest in Tennessee and ranks 41st nationwide.

In 2000, the Memphis metropolitan area had 1,205,204 residents. By the 2010 census , the population had increased to 1,316,100.

Counties

The region consists of eight counties in the outskirts of the city of Memphis, which are spread on both sides of the Mississippi over the three states of Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas.

The official census in 2000 found a population of 1,205,204. These were distributed over 448,473 households in 312,422 families.

The population in 2000 was 52.9 percent white , 43.5 percent African American , 0.2 percent Native American , 1.3 percent Asian and 1.2 percent other. 1.0 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 2.4 percent of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the above groups.

The median income per household was 35,988  US dollars  (USD), the median family income 41,130 USD. The median income for men was $ 32,830 and that for women was $ 22,970. The per capita income was $ 16,729.
