Marion (also Marion City ) is a US city in Arkansas and the seat of the county seat of Crittenden County . It has 12,369 inhabitants (as of 2010) on an area of 34.8 km².
The place was determined in 1836 to the administrative seat of the county, after Greenock had previously held this status from 1826 ; because Greenock was too difficult to reach, Marion was given preference. At the end of 1835 the first building for a district court in Marion was ready for occupancy.
history
The area in which Marion is today belonged to Louisiana ( New Spain ) between 1764 and 1803 . After the Louisiana Purchase , the territory of France by the USA (1803), it belonged to the Arkansas Territory . During the resettlement of the Indians, the so-called Path of Tears , the Indians also crossed the area of the later Marion.
During the civil war , the SS Sultana was destroyed by an explosion on April 27, 1865 near what would later become the city area. She transported liberated Union prisoners of war. 1,500 people were probably killed. A monument donated by the Daughters of the American Revolution commemorates the calamity.
Marion was founded in 1896. The city was named after General Francis Marion , an officer from the American Revolutionary War .
