Southaven is a city in DeSoto County in the US state Mississippi and is located directly on the border with the state of Tennessee , about 300 kilometers north of the capital Jackson . Southaven is a southern suburb of Memphis , Tennessee and is part of the Memphis metropolitan area .

At the 2010 census , the city had 48,982 inhabitants. In 2014 there were already 51,824 inhabitants, of which around two thirds are white and almost a quarter are black, with Hispanics making up the largest minority with a share of around five percent. Overall, Southaven's population grew by 78.8% between 2000 and 2014. In February 2011, Southaven was Mississippi's third largest city.

In 1988 the Baptist Hospital-DeSoto was founded.

Darren Musselwhite has been the city's mayor since 2013 . Former Mayor Greg Davis was embroiled in a scandal over the misappropriation of city funds and was sentenced to pay back more than $ 170,000 in total to the city; that sentence was upheld by the Mississippi Supreme Court after Davis' appeal .

The University of Mississippi and Northwest Mississippi Community College have branch offices in Southaven.

Southaven has its own ice hockey team, the Mississippi RiverKings , who play in the Southern Professional Hockey League .

Southaven is the 35th northern cut latitude and the 90th western longitude .

Memphis Airport is about three miles north of Southaven . On the Interstate 55 to get from Southaven to Jackson.
