Fentress County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Jamestown .

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Tennessee, is about 6 miles to the north from Kentucky , and has an area of ​​1,292 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pickett County , Scott County , Morgan County , Cumberland County , Overton County, and Putnam Counties . Part of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is in this county.

Fentress County was formed on November 28, 1823 from parts of Morgan County and Overton County. It was named after James Fentress (1763-1843), a politician from Tennessee who was speaker in the Tennessee House of Representatives .

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Alvin Cullom York Farm . Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 13, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Fentress County had 16,625 people in 6,693 households and 4,818 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.24 percent white, 0.11 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian and 0.03 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.37 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.54 percent of the population.

24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44, 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.7 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.1 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 23,238 , and the median income for a family is $ 28,856. Males had a median income of $ 23,606 versus $ 18,729 for females.
