Decatur County was formed from parts of Perry County in November 1845 and the administrative organization was completed on March 6, 1846. It was named after Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), a commanding American naval officer a. a. in the British-American War and the American-Tripolitan War .

The John P. Rains Hotel is one of six entries for the county in the NRHP.

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 13, 2018).

As of the 2010 census , Decatur County's population was 11,757 in 4,985 households. The population density was 13.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.3 people lived in each of the 4,985 households.

The racial the population was composed of 95.3 percent white, 3.0 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.9 percent of the population.
