The county is located in central northwest Tennessee. It is located about 25 miles north of Kentucky and has an area of 1130 square kilometers, of which 107 square kilometers are water.
Benton County is located on the west bank of the Tennessee River, which is dammed up to Kentucky Lake . To the west, the county is bounded by the Big Sandy River , which flows into Kentucky Lake on the county's northern border.

Benton County was formed on December 19, 1835 from former parts of Henry County and Humphreys County. It was named after David Benton (1779-1860), a veteran of the War of 1812 and an early settler in the area.
Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 9, 2018).
