Unicoi County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Erwin .
geography
The county is located in east Tennessee, bordering North Carolina , is 40 miles north of Virginia , and covers an area of 483 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Washington County , Carter County , Yancey County, North Carolina, Madison County, North Carolina, and Greene County .
history
Unicoi County was formed on March 23, 1875 from parts of Carter County and Washington County. It was named after an Indian expression for the southern Appalachians .
Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 11, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Unicoi County had 17,667 people in 7,516 households and 5,223 families. The population density was 37 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.96 percent white, 0.07 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.95 percent of other ethnic groups ; 0.66 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.94 percent of the population.
Of the 7,516 households, 26.6 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.5 percent were single mothers, and 30.5 percent were non-families. 27.5 percent were single households and 13.4 percent had people aged 65 or over.
20.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44, 26.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.1 percent were older than 65. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.1 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 29,863 , and the median income for a family was $ 36,871. Males had a median income of $ 30,206 versus $ 20,379 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,612. 8.7 percent of families and 13.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
