Union County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Maynardville .

The county is located in northeast Tennessee, about 25 miles north of the southwestern tip of Virginia , and has an area of 640 square kilometers, of which 61 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Claiborne County , Grainger County , Knox County , Anderson County, and Campbell County .
history
Union County was formed on January 3, 1850 from parts of Anderson County, Campbell County, Claiborne County, Grainger County, and Knox County. It was named because of the desire to belong to the Union when the debates on secession broke out in connection with the slave question .
Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 11, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Union County had 17,808 people in 6,742 households and 5,191 families. The population density was 31 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.46 percent white, 0.10 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.86 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.79 percent of the population.
Of the 6,742 households, 35.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 62.2 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers, and 23.0 percent were non-families. 19.8 percent were single households and 7.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average household size was 2.99 people.
25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 31.0 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.8 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 96.6 males.
The median income for a household in the 27,335 USD , and the median income for a family was 31,843 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,436 versus $ 18,665 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,375. 16.8 percent of families and 19.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
