Sequatchie County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Dunlap .

The county is located in southeast Tennessee, about 45 km to the south from Alabama and Georgia , and has an area of 689 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by Van Buren County , Bledsoe County , Hamilton County , Marion County , Grunby County, and Warren County .

The county is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area .

history

Sequatchie County was formed on December 9, 1857 from parts of Hamilton County. It was named after a Cherokee chief who negotiated contracts with the settlers.

According to the 2000 census , Sequatchie County had 11,370 people in 4,463 households and 3,311 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.66 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.48 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.82 percent of the population.

Of the 4,463 households, 33.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers, and 25.8 percent were non-families. 22.4 percent were single households and 8.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average household size was 2.92 people.

24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.3 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.8 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,959 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,435. Males had a median income of $ 27,535 versus $ 20,422 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,468. 13.5 percent of families and 16.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
