Marion County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Jasper .

The county is located in southeast Tennessee, borders Alabama and Georgia to the south and has an area of ​​1,327 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Grunby County , Sequatchie County , Hamilton County , Dade County, Georgia, Jackson County, Alabama, and Franklin County .

The county is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area .

Marion County was formed from Cherokee Land on November 20, 1817. It was named after Francis Marion , also known by his nickname Swamp Fox , a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and later brigadier general in the South Carolina militia in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Marion County had 27,776 people in 11,037 households and 8,134 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer.
