Marion County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Jasper .

The county is located in southeast Tennessee, borders Alabama and Georgia to the south and has an area of 1,327 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Grunby County , Sequatchie County , Hamilton County , Dade County, Georgia, Jackson County, Alabama, and Franklin County .
The county is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area .

history
Marion County was formed from Cherokee Land on November 20, 1817. It was named after Francis Marion , also known by his nickname Swamp Fox , a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and later brigadier general in the South Carolina militia in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Marion County had 27,776 people in 11,037 households and 8,134 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.33 percent white, 4.14 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.27 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.78 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.73 percent of the population.
Of the 11,037 households, 31.1 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.9 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers, and 26.3 percent were non-families. 23.6 percent were single households and 10.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average household size was 2.93 people.
23.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44, 26.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.9 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.0 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,419 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,351. Males had a median income of $ 30,236 versus $ 21,778 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,419. 10.8 percent of families and 14.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
