Greene County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Greeneville .

The county is located in northeast Tennessee, borders North Carolina in the southeast , is about 35 km from Virginia to the north and has an area of 1,616 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It borders clockwise to the following counties: Hawkins County , Washington County , Unicoi County , Madison County (North Carolina), Cocke County and Hamblen County .

history
Greene County was formed on April 18, 1783 from parts of Washington County. It was named after Nathanael Greene , an important American general in the colonial army in the American War of Independence .
15 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 14, 2018). Also located in Greene is the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site , which includes the homes and grave of President Andrew Johnson .

As of the 2000 census , Greene County had 62,909 people in 25,756 households and 18,132 families. The population density was 39 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.42 percent white, 2.11 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.43 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.02 percent of the population.
Of the 25,756 households, 29.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers, and 29.6 percent were non-families. 25.8 percent were single households and 10.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.38 and the average household size was 2.84 people.
22.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44, 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.8 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.1 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.4 males.
The median income for a household in the 30,382 USD , and the median income for a family was 36,889 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,331 versus $ 20,304 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,746. 11.2 percent of families and 14.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
