Washington County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Jonesborough .
geography
The county is located almost in the extreme northeast of Tennessee and has an area of 854 square kilometers, of which 9 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Sullivan County , Carter County , Unicoi County , Greene County, and Hawkins Counties .
history
Washington County was formed as the Original County from the Washington District on August 22, 1776. It was named after George Washington , commander of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War and first US President .
One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the Mountain Branch, National Home For Disabled Volunteer Soldiers . 34 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 12, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Washington County had 107,198 people in 44,195 households and 29,478 families. The population density was 127 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.72 percent white, 3.82 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.73 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.51 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.97 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.38 percent of the population.
Of the 44,195 households, 28.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers, and 33.3 percent were non-families. 27.8 percent were single households and 9.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.33 and the average household size was 2.85 people.
21.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.8 percent between 18 and 24, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.9 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 94.8 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.7 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,116 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,162. Males had a median income of $ 30,874 versus $ 21,485 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,085. 10.2 percent of families and 13.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
