Roane County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Kingston .

The county is located in east-east Tennessee and has an area of 1023 square kilometers, of which 88 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Morgan County , Anderson County , Loudon County , McMinn County , Meigs County, and Cumberland Counties .

Ghost town
history
Roane County was formed on November 6, 1801 from parts of Knox County . It was named after Archibald Roane , a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and later governor of Tennessee.
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the X-10 Reactor, Oak Ridge National Laboratory . 21 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 1, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Roane County had 51,910 people in 21,200 households and 15,242 families. The population density was 56 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.24 percent white, 2.71 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.23 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.69 percent of the population.
Of the 21,200 households, 28.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.3 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers, and 28.1 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average household size was 2.87 people.
22.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 27.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.1 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 94.0 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 90.7 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,226 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,399. Males had a median income of $ 32,204 versus $ 22,439 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,456. 10.3 percent of families and 13.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
