Hawkins County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Rogersville .

The county is located in northeast Tennessee, borders Virginia to the north and has an area of 1,294 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Scott County, Virginia, Sullivan County , Greene County , Hamblen County , Grainger County, and Hancock Counties .

Hawkins County was formed on January 6, 1787 from parts of Sullivan County. It was named after Benjamin Hawkins , a farmer, statesman, Indian Agents of North Carolina , a member of the Continental Congress , and US senator .
Twelve structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 17, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Hawkins County had 53,563 people in 21,936 households and 15,925 families. The population density was 42 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.24 percent white, 1.55 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.78 percent of the population.
Of the 21,936 households, 31.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers, and 27.4 percent were non-families. 24.4 percent were single households and 9.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average household size was 2.86 people.
23.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44, 25.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.2 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.5 males.
The median income for a household in the 31,300 USD , and the median income for a family was 37,557 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,959 versus $ 22,082 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,073. 12.7 percent of families and 15.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
