Hawkins County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Rogersville .

The county is located in northeast Tennessee, borders Virginia to the north and has an area of ​​1,294 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Scott County, Virginia, Sullivan County , Greene County , Hamblen County , Grainger County, and Hancock Counties .

Hawkins County was formed on January 6, 1787 from parts of Sullivan County. It was named after Benjamin Hawkins , a farmer, statesman, Indian Agents of North Carolina , a member of the Continental Congress , and US senator .

The New Providence Presbyterian Church, Academy, and Cemetery is one of twelve entries for the county in the NRHP.

Twelve structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 17, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Hawkins County had 53,563 people in 21,936 households and 15,925 families. The population density was 42 inhabitants per square kilometer.
