Cannon County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Woodbury , named after General Levi Woodbury , Secretary of the Navy under President Andrew Jackson .

The county is located just east of the geographic center of Tennessee and covers an area of 688 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered clockwise by DeKalb County , Warren County , Coffee County , Rutherford County, and Wilson Counties .
history
Cannon County was formed on January 31, 1836 from parts of Coffe County, Rutherford County, Warren County and Wilson County. It was named after Newton Cannon , a governor of Tennessee.

As of the 2000 census , Cannon County had 12,826 people in 4,998 households and 3,643 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.87 percent white, 1.46 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.40 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.81 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.22 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,998 households, 33.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, and 27.1 percent were non-families. 24.3 percent were single households and 10.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average household size was 2.99 people.
25.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.7 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.3 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,809 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,424. Males had a median income of $ 28,659 versus $ 21,489 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,405. 9.6 percent of families and 12.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
