Sumner County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Gallatin , the largest city is Hendersonville .

The county is located in northern Tennessee, bordering Kentucky and has an area of 1,407 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Davidson County , Macon County , Robertson County , Trousdale County , Wilson County , Allen County, Kentucky, and Simpson County, Kentucky.

Sumner County was formed on November 18, 1786 from parts of Davidson County. It was named after Jethro Sumner (1733–1785), an American general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence .

Wynnewood ( HABS , 1936)

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the log cabin settlement of Wynnewood . 37 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 5, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Sumner County had 130,449 people in 48,941 households and 37,048 families. The population density was 95 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.49 percent white, 5.78 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.66 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.80 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.96 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 48,941 households, 36.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers, and 24.3 percent were non-families. 20.3 percent were single households and 7.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average household size was 3.04.

26.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.7 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.9 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.3 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 46,030 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,125. Males had a median income of $ 36,875 versus $ 25,720 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,164. 6.2 percent of families and 8.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
