Sullivan County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Blountville .

The county is located almost in the extreme northeast of Tennessee, borders Virginia to the north and has an area of ​​1113 square kilometers, of which 43 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Scott County, Virginia, Washington County (Virginia), Bristol (Independent City) (Virginia), Johnson County , Carter County , Washington County, and Hawkins County .

Sullivan County was formed from parts of Washington County on October 18, 1779, and administrative organization was completed on February 7, 1780. It was named after John Sullivan , a major general in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War , leader of the 1779 Sullivan expedition (a punitive expedition against the Iroquois ) and later governor of New Hampshire .

According to the 2000 census , Sullivan County had 153,048 people in 63,556 households and 44,806 families. The population density was 143 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.55 percent white, 1.89 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.43 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.69 percent were descended from two or more races.
