Polk County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Benton .

The county is located in the extreme southeast of Tennessee, borders North Carolina to the east and Georgia to the south and has an area of ​​1,146 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Monroe County , Cherokee County, North Carolina, Fannin County, Georgia, Murray County, Georgia, Bradley County, and McMinn County . The Cherokee National Forest extends partially into Polk County.

James K. Polk

Polk County was formed on November 28, 1839 from parts of Bradley County and McMinn County. It was named after James K. Polk , the eleventh President of the United States .

Before that, he served as governor of the state of Tennessee (1839 to 1841) and speaker of the House of Representatives (1835 to 1839). Polk belonged to the Democratic Party .

According to the 2000 census , Polk County had 16,050 people in 6,448 households and 4,752 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer.
