Rutherford County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Murfreesboro .

The county is located on the geographic center of Tennessee and has an area of ​​1,616 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wilson County , Cannon County , Coffee County , Bedford County , Marshall County , Williamson County, and Davidson County . The Stones River National Battlefield is located in Rutherford County.

Rutherford County was formed on October 25, 1803 from parts of Davidson County. It was named after Griffin Rutherford (1731-1805), an officer and general in the North Carolina militia and early politician of the Southwest Territory .

According to the 2000 census , Rutherford Counties had 182,023 people in 66,443 households and 47,440 families. The population density was 114 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.73 percent white, 9.51 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 1.90 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.32 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.20 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
